Holiday Season & Inclusion: How to Make Holidays Accessible for Adults with Disabilities

The holiday season is a time for joy, connection, and celebration. But for many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), this time of year can also bring unique challenges - from sensory overload and unfamiliar routines to accessibility barriers and social pressure.

The holiday season is a time for joy, connection, and celebration. But for many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), this time of year can also bring unique challenges - from sensory overload and unfamiliar routines to accessibility barriers and social pressure.

At My Own Place, we believe the holidays should be enjoyable and empowering for everyone. Whether you’re a family member, caregiver, community member, or neighbor, there are simple, meaningful ways to make your celebrations more inclusive, accessible, and dignified for adults with disabilities.

Below are practical tips and thoughtful considerations to help make this season brighter and more comfortable for all.

1. Plan Ahead With Individual Needs in Mind

Every individual experiences the holidays differently. Before events or gatherings:

  • Ask what a person needs to feel comfortable - don’t assume.
  • Share event details in advance (schedule, noise levels, expected activities).
  • Offer choices: attending the entire event, coming for a portion, or celebrating in a quieter space.

Tip: A quick conversation ahead of time can reduce anxiety and help set expectations for a positive experience.

2. Create Sensory-Friendly Environments

Lights, sounds, and crowds are common during the holidays - and can be overwhelming for some.

  • Opt for soft lighting and reduce flashing decorations.
  • Provide quiet areas where people can decompress if needed.
  • Keep volume levels moderate and avoid sudden loud noises.
  • Consider sensory-friendly events or dedicated “low-stim” time slots.

Even small adjustments can make a big impact.

3. Make Your Space Accessible for All Guests

Physical accessibility matters in every celebration setting.

  • Clear walkways and ensure furniture layout supports easy movement.
  • Keep entryways wide and unobstructed.
  • Make sure bathrooms are accessible.
  • If hosting outside the home, choose venues that meet ADA accessibility standards.

Accessibility ensures that everyone is able to participate fully, and safely, in the festivities.

4. Honor Routines While Embracing Holiday Traditions

Routines bring comfort and predictability. During the busy holiday season:

  • Keep key parts of daily routines intact (meal times, medication schedules, rest periods).
  • Prepare individuals for changes using visual schedules, reminders, or quick run-throughs.
  • Introduce new traditions slowly and with clear explanations.

Balance is key: celebrating the season while respecting structure.

5. Foster Social Inclusion With Dignity and Respect

The holidays are a time for togetherness. Help adults with I/DD feel included by:

  • Encouraging full participation in conversations, games, and meals.
  • Offering roles in holiday activities (decorating, cooking, gift-wrapping, leading a toast).
  • Avoiding talking about individuals instead of to them.
  • Respecting preferences - including the choice not to participate in certain activities.

Inclusion isn't just about access; it's about belonging.

6. Support Communication Preferences

Everyone communicates differently.

  • Provide multiple options: verbal communication, written notes, gestures, AAC devices.
  • Allow extra time for responses.
  • Ask clear, direct questions (e.g., “Would you like to take a break now?”).
  • Encourage everyone at gatherings to be patient and considerate.

Communication support ensures interactions are comfortable and meaningful.

7. Offer Food & Gift Options for All Needs

Holiday meals and gifts can also be adapted with inclusivity in mind.

For meals:

  • Ask about dietary restrictions or texture sensitivities.
  • Provide familiar foods alongside holiday dishes.
  • Label allergens clearly if hosting a large gathering.
  • Ask about any adaptive utensils

For gifts:

  • Choose items that align with personal interests, sensory needs, or daily living support.
  • Avoid overly complicated items that may feel inaccessible or frustrating.

Thoughtful planning creates positive, low-stress experiences for everyone.

8. Celebrate Independence Wherever Possible

The heart of My Own Place’s mission is supporting adults with disabilities in leading independent, fulfilling lives.

During the holidays:

  • Encourage self-advocacy by asking individuals what they want for the celebration.
  • Let them make choices about activities, food, clothing, or gifts.
  • Give opportunities to lead traditions, help host, or make creative decisions.

The holidays are a wonderful time to recognize each person’s capabilities and strengths.

9. Show Patience, Flexibility, and Compassion

Holiday stress affects everyone  and flexibility can make the difference between an overwhelming event and a joyful one.

  • Be prepared for plans to change.
  • Offer breaks without questions or judgment.
  • Maintain a calm, reassuring presence.

A little understanding goes a long way.

10. Make Inclusion a Year-Round Commitment

While December brings unique celebrations, inclusion isn’t seasonal. The choices we make today can inspire a more accessible, equitable world all year long.

At My Own Place, we are committed to empowering adults with I/DD to live independently, confidently, and with dignity; not just during the holidays, but every day.

Final Thoughts

Creating inclusive holidays doesn’t require major changes; just thoughtful, person-centered adjustments that ensure everyone feels welcome, respected, and able to participate.

This season, let’s celebrate the joy of community, the beauty of diversity, and the importance of belonging.
